For twenty years, at least, I wouldn't pay attention to any video with Clapton in it because of his seriously ignominious history in the romance department. I never did think he was the kind of great he and many others would have us think, but it was his tendency to hose on other men's girlfriends and wives that just never stopped pissing me off.
I've softened on the subject somewhat since he came out with Van Morrison against the coof nazism... started doing some podcasts, showing himself to really be working to spare us from his own idiocy... so when my friend Hank sent me a link to one of his seemingly endless attempts to associate himself with other artists — that lifelong ego problem — I decided to actually listen, cut him some slack at last.
Which set me about listening to other examples of him playing with my hero. This one was the best. But I'm one of those people who has ended up preferring to stay home with my recordings rather than risk hating it live.
I've worn out multiple incarnations of every Dire Straits album over the course of a few car stereos. I catch EVERY deviation from the original and HATE it because, well, dammit, because I end up singing Knopfler's guitar on all of them and it dents my cosmos when he wanders off that template.
So I gotta go look for the originals to undent myself.
Bad enough the sound quality isn't like my car stereo's.
