Funny how first thing off the bat Mark knocks me back to a scene with Jon Cott from a thousand years ago. I'd shown him some of my poems. He's going through them, pulls one and says, "This one belongs in The Paris Review, but they'll never take it."
Complimenting my work, but blowing it off in the same breath... seemed to me.
I ask him why not, and he looks at me for a couple beats and then says, "Well, you have to be of a certain ilk for that, and telling the truth is not that ilk." I guess... no... now I am CERTAIN this is what he meant: you gotta make high art that comports with their narrative.

There are artists in this world who realize it's not high art if it's not the truth and you NEVER hear of them. You might bump into them, even often, and never know.
I have not thought of that moment in all these thousand years, and, bam, as clear as if it just happened this very instant.
pipe up any time....
