I think people have always been bothered by the truth. It means we have to get out of our own way and deal with things responsibly. It has always been a mistake to ignore truth, but humans generate so many ways to sculpt the air around it to make it easier to swallow or to make it seem less terrible or to make it seem more righteous, whatever serves, that real communication and real progress somehow always elude us.
Meanwhile, truth remains impervious to our sweaty efforts to play-act our way around it. Which then makes it sweaty work to wipe away that dank air to return to the actual.
