She just took one fuck of a long time explaining EXACTLY why I turned down my big opportunity to be a star environmentalist. I had people BEGGING. I said no, over and over and over. I had seen it all beforehand and I would not go there. I stuck to my work and shunned the limelight. People are STARVED for leadership. Charlatans are STARVED for fodder. You either shun the great popularity contest in order to maintain effectiveness, or you turn your dreams for goodness to prevail into a goddam CIRCUS. The biggest names in ANY cause actually begin to attend to their popularity more than the cause because the popularity feels SO good that they actually BELIEVE that keeping the adulation is the ONLY way to serve the cause. That's why 99.9% of great causes FAIL.
