For the usual midnight din of pots and pans and fireworks and rifles and relentlessly barking dogs, but there was not a peep here to ring in the new year. How odd. Maybe everyone's too demoralized. I heard a distant thump right about on time, but I think that was coming from Oregon. The usually irrepressible Hispanics clanging their pots and pans was nowhere within hearing range. I think that part is the creepiest, or biggest relief, depending on your mood, but for all my annual bitching, now it seems pretty strange.
