Fidel did this, and, yeah, maybe it's like Iceland, an island where it's easy to pull the population together to do things better. That really could explain it all, but it can't work when you don't have strong and compassionate leadership, with serious goals and the brains to reach them.
It's really not so bad to do without a little of your freedom if the leadership is benevolent and dedicated to its people, but there's just no way to perpetuate that, to insure it passes from great leader to great leader, to keep it from falling to the inducements of greedy and inhumane psychopaths.
Short of a cosmic ray removing the worst instincts of humans, it can't last.
