We succeeded. So much was either vastly improved or fixed.
Then, suddenly, none of that seemed to be verifiably so anymore, as though our lives up to somewhere around 1980 didn't happen, as though two sphinxes had never guarded the causeway to the pyramids at Giza... just everything in the public space suddenly ignored select things that had been tending toward the dawning of a new golden age.
Who made that call? Did it happen in an earthquake? Was I awake or asleep? Is that what's wrong with my mother?
