I think he killed himself. He lost his wife a couple years ago and the pall has not lifted from that house in all this time. I have no idea in the regular walking around world what it was, just that a bunch of emergency vehicles pulled up and ran into his place with a stretcher. So maybe he just dialed 911 and will be back in a few days, but there's been a seamless fabric of no coming from his house since she up and died on him.

Hours later, I still don't know what happened. I went off to town to pay bills and get enough food to eke through until after the holiday. Ambulances flying around in every direction. All kinds of traffic. Sprinklers on full blast in all the fields... some of which are askew and raining all over passing motorists, making instant mud of their windshields and maybe even causing this rash of medical emergencies and I'm back here now, mopping my brow and reading about all the fires breaking out in neighboring counties and major accidents on 101 and murders in Covelo and determining that I'm now SO good at discerning between the mugshots from county-to-county that I can tell where they were arrested before even reading the headlines.
