I mean the differing images of the state of the face/s can be attributed to the differing states of restoration at any given dated photograph, but that hardly accounts for why I am positive there were two of these, side by side, marking the entrance to the Giza site when I was a young girl.

Cairo was a good deal further from the site back then, too.

I'm not kidding. I remember studying the photographs and wondering why their faces were obliterated, one worse than the other, and this one being the better of the two, and being told the bit about Napoleon's men using them for target practice. I remember getting a postcard of them from my great aunt and uncle when they were there back in the 1950's. I remember them in magazines.

I remember this very, very clearly.

I just don't know when the last time was that I saw both of them in a picture. I might've been as old as twentysomething or as young as mid-teens, but there were two, dammit, two of them.
