It didn't occur to me that those nice men at Fisherman's Wharf who cooked up crab for you right out there on the street had dropped live crabs into the boiling water until I was something like ten or so. Gramma took us there often and somehow managed to omit that part when we stopped to buy crabs from them. I might still be none the wiser except for noticing crabs moving in the basket as it was being dipped into the pot.
At least that way I wasn't so shocked when I saw Annie Hall.
