They're not intelligent. They seem to be. They have a brilliance for mimicry of intelligence. They spot the good stuff put out by humans, memorize the pertinent bits, the bits they feel will impress us, move us to believe in them, and practice their delivery in the bathroom mirror every morning. That's part of what it takes to manipulate people, to finagle situations into yielding up for them the goodies they are after. They are really, really good at that... and we are so not. But when they are busted, finally seen for what and who they are, they are singularly unprepared for it, start sounding stupider and stupider and stupider. Take this chump. Would you want him even for the doorman in any governing body at all?
