Why does this have to be creepy? If they were pingos surely the herders would have noted that what had been a hill was now a hole, no? And if they really were, wouldn't the surface around the holes look considerably different now? I don't know. I so don't know, but the abruptness of the edge, the melty-looking edge in that first image reminds me of something....
But, having looked to see what we know about these, I find we have something that maybe solves the thing about all those rings of raised rock in the Arabian desert. It might once have been polar there? Or even a glacier so huge it froze water in the ground in this pingo-like fashion?
