Seems to me that if it could be made a real success, instead of just a capitalist one, we might look to one of his translators for the best shot. If there would be anyone competent to bring out his intention to its fullest, I imagine it would be one of them... someone who has meditated and considered and agonized long over the conversion of his words into their language.

I would want it to be someone who has translated all his work. There is such a range, and not just between forms of fiction and nonfiction. One of his books had almost no punctuation... the whole thing. His way with time is probably unmatched in all literature. Chronicle of a Death Foretold would be the most stark example of this, but if there is one dominant aspect of Gabriel García Márquez's writing, it is how magnificently he dealt with time.

I don't want to be coarse about it, but, truly, his work was like falling in love. The communication was so much deeper than a matter of taste alone. It might be that others miss this mastery of time when reading him, don't notice they aren't scrambling for their bearings in dreamland, that they are for all intents and purposes simply dreaming what he has told them to dream, oblivious to the honor bestowed on them. I was never oblivious to it. I was thrilled by it. Literally, spiritually, physically.

Can anyone left on earth be trusted with this?
