Most of the animals engaging with humans in work and sport are totally into it, really enjoy it, want it. I actually knew this before my horse dumped me so she could beat Jeff and Pride, but that did pretty much convince me I wasn't imagining it. Even the spookiest horse will usually get completely into a parade. They start jigging in time with the marching band. It's a hoot. Most race horses want to win, though they do end up getting bored with it, and stop caring if they get passed. Perhaps the Jockey Club will consider setting the races to music if they won't open up the stud book to get some sturdier legs back onto the breed. But in any case, animals know what's going on. They engage happily when they are not being humiliated.
