lest you think i'm becoming some kind of psychedelic advocate

I wish to remind you that I'm more in Michael Tsarion's camp on this one. While I must leap to point out that psychedelic experience is most likely to leave you with a more spiritually-sympathetic and less systemically-oriented cast of mind, make you generally less apt to eat the propaganda whole, it is not, not, not The Way. I keep throwing out bits of evidence of routes to freeing your mind, and gobbling some mushrooms has to be one of those, but it is not the path to true humanity. It might be used as such by someone who is already going there, but by far the most people who dabble with this stuff are simply interested in partying, in engaging with novelty for novelty's sake. The best psychedelics can do, of themselves, is to give those who will focus their lives on the realization of fundamental reality some vivid encouragement to keep at it.

There is no pill for this.

The main thing I ever want to point out to anyone is just this. There's a way out. Take it. Whatever gets you on that track is fine by me. Whatever seeks to conceal it from you, wittingly or unwittingly, will garner heaps of scorn from me. It's the best present you could ever, ever, ever get. Count all your blessings by all means, but if you ever get on it and finally see for yourself that to which I point, you are going to agree immediately that nothing better ever happened to you. In fact, you could not in your wildest imaginings have dreamed up something this good.
