It's just this bozo with an ego problem trying to make a point about the PTB introducing LSD to turn us all into a bunch of ineffectual twits. I think he's made the point that it may have at least been their hope, but he insists upon making a hairier deal out of it than it merits.
It didn't work.
What worked was money. They bought us off. They turned hippies into yuppies. Mission accomplished.
But no, he's got to smear Terence McKenna, and Alan Watts, and a number of assholes nobody cared about at the time. He doesn't seem to realize that few of us ever took Leary seriously. We liked the slogan McLuhan gave him. Full stop. It was suitably Fuck You for our mood. A few people went way overboard on acid. Most people didn't even try it. Most of those who did, didn't keep it up. Some recognized the call of the spirit through it. A very few just kept taking it occasionally for purely recreational purposes. All it did was make us more convinced the establishment was full of shit.
I actually think the only real sense in which you could say psychedelics made things worse for the world is that those who were bought off feel even guiltier about it than they would have without it, and that means they have to deny it harder... if that could possibly be seen to make any difference to psychopaths.
Anyway, in the course of further belaboring this moot point, he brought up the Houseboat Summit, gasping about how they were plotting to turn us all into peasants. They were plotting to turn us all into sexually-liberated Comanches. They recognized the worth and the genuine humanity in native ways, and wanted to bring about an updated version of it. I happen to think that is the only way humans can survive... maybe even the only way we should survive.
