It was a little valley tucked between hills covered with redwood forest. It was mostly pasture, with a couple three or four snags from antiquity in it and crisscrossed with tiny streams that were used by spawning salmon every winter. They would sometimes end up in the middle of the driveway if the puddles had gotten so deep it was too hard to find the culvert pipe under it. They'd just try to ford the driveway, I guess, and this rarely turns out well for a fish.

It made me crazy that these huge salmon would make it some two miles up these streams from the river, with not enough water in them to cover them most of the way, only to end up dead in the middle of my driveway.

It was a boon for the bobcats or mountain lions or bear or coyote or foxes who also lived there, but still, it's so sad....
