In all my years of forest activism, my work was aimed at making that crazy-making oxymoron "forest management" into something more closely resembling letting the forest manage itself. That is the way to save it. Our end of the bargain is merely to proscribe profligate use. So I spent most of my time plugging the little regulatory loopholes the lobbyists had opened up. I had some victories. I never fooled myself they would last, because I'm finite and lobbyists aren't.
