The leaders of the U.S., France and the U.K. said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization must continue operations in Libya until Col. Moammar Gadhafi leaves power, raising the stakes in the showdown with the Libyan ruler.

In an opinion column to be published in major European newspapers, U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said: "So long as Gadhafi is in power, NATO must maintain its operations so that civilians remain protected and the pressure on the regime builds."
